It pains me to say anything bad about Jean Paul Gaultier because I usually love his approach to clothes, but the shoes from Spring 2015 are far from the man’s finest showing. Gaultier has never had quite the same yin for accessories as he does for clothing, but these shoes leave even more to be desired than usual.
Normally, I’m loath to call something a “hooker shoe.” The designation isn’t terribly meaningful when basically every shoe lover out there has at least one pair of six-inch platform stilettos in her closet, and sexually charged footwear isn’t necessarily a bad thing. But for real, you guys – these are hooker shoes. A palette of red, black, silver and white patent leather is already a difficult aesthetic challenge in the first place, and pairing those colors and materials with ankle-strapped stilettos and the occasional knee-high boot doesn’t do anything to help the cause. I might be more positive about the collection’s other major look, cutout workboots, if Balenciaga hadn’t done such a superior job making something very similar earlier this week.
